SQL Server DBA hybrid or remote - North West

We're working with a leading healthcare tech co looking to recruit an experienced hands-on SQL Database Administrator to lead the support and monitoring of their UK Microsoft SQL databases across four UK group companies. Their deal person will have excellent working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server supporting live transactional databases in a resilient cloud environment and ideally good knowledge of enterprise infrastructure and networks.

Your next role?

As a member of a small team you will also lead and cross train in all database administration disciplines across a  number of live databases and critical products. You will primarily be responsible for the implementation, configuration, maintenance, management and performance of critical MS SQL Server RDBMS Systems across the UK estate. Working alongside an Oracle DBA, providing mutual support and cover for each other and as part of a wider  cloud engineering team you’ll be supported and given the opportunity to learn and develop.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage SQL Server databases
  • Configure and maintain database servers and processes
  • Monitor system health and performance
  • Ensure high levels of performance, availability, sustainability and security
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency eg by reducing server footprint/licensing costs.  Provide input into the SQL server strategy
  • Assist developers with query tuning and schema refinement
  • Design, Deploy and Support IT disciplines including: Operating systems based on Wintel and Linux incl Oracle appliances (DB/Weblogic); Application/DB servers based on HP, Dell, Cisco Hardware VMware Server virtualisation; Enterprise storage solution from NetApp, EMC, Pure and HP ITIL processes

Their ideal person? Someone with great interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work well with others or alone, plus good time management, organisational and multi-tasking skills

  • 3+ Years of experience as a MS SQL Server DBA or similar role
  • Experience with Performance Tuning and Optimization (PTO), DB backups, restores and recovery models; High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for SQL Server; managing Oracle DBs, weblogic, appliances and services
  • Solid networking knowledge (OSI network layers, TCP/IP, Firewalls, Load Balancers); Public Cloud experience (AWS or Azure); MCP - Microsoft Certified Professional or equivalent experience

Desirable Skills: Exposure to healthcare market Good all-round knowledge of Software containerisation; Enterprise storage solutions; application deployment in both Wintel, Unix and Web environments; Virtualisation using VMWare vSphere; Enterprise Hardware; HP Servers and Networking; Cisco UCS; NetApp Enterprise Storage; EMC Enterprise Storage; Oracle Databases and Appliances; PostgreSQL database; Checkpoint Firewall; F5 Load Balancers and security appliances
